Easy access to fast food restaurants, in addition to their intensive marketing, is a significant contributing factor to the consumption of foods with low nutritional value among the population, particularly young people.
Their presence near schools creates environments with increased risks of chronic diseases. In addition, single-use containers linked to this type of product pollute our public spaces.
Supervising the establishment of fast food establishments near schools and residential neighbourhoods is possible for municipalities wishing to promote the health and well-being of young people and families.
Since 2016, the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (CDN-NDG) borough adopted a new zoning bylaw intended for fast-food restaurants, which limits them to certain areas conducive to these types of businesses and keeps them away from commercial arteries in the heart of residential neighbourhoods or schools.
In 2022, the Supreme Court, Canada's highest court, irrefutably confirmed the validity of the CDN-NDG zoning bylaw by refusing the fast-food restaurants' final appeal. All municipalities can now adopt similar bylaws.
